Can chiropractic care resolve chronic ear infections in a child? The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health (Summer Issue 2014) presents a study that documents resolution of chronic ear infections (a.k.a. chronic otitis media) in a 9 ½ year old female using chiropractic techniques.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, otitis media is an infection of the inner ear, located just behind the eardrum. The eustachian tubes connect the middle ear to the nose. A blockage can occur when a build-up of fluid is present, often times following a cold. Pressure and pain may result from such a blockage. If the pressure is severe enough, there is increased risk of an eardrum rupture.  Children are more likely to suffer from acute ear infections as the tube that connects their middle ear to their nasal passage are narrower and shorter than an adult’s, making them susceptible to fluid becoming trapped. Conventional medicine will treat such infections with antibiotics. The CDC cites antibiotic resistance as a growing concern in the US. This is where chiropractic care comes in.

Documentation shows that a 9 ½ year old female was presented to a chiropractic clinic with her mother for treatment of chronic ear infections, neck pains and headaches. The patient had been medically diagnosed with chronic otitis media and had recently been scheduled for tympanostomy tube surgery. Hearing loss had also been reported.

After careful examination of the cervical spine, the patient underwent a course of chiropractic care that lasted for 3 weeks, with 3 treatments per week. Throughout the duration of care, the patient no longer experienced headaches or neck pains. Hearing was measured and reports showed a 95% improvement from the last time hearing loss had been registered. Subsequently, the surgical procedure was cancelled.  This is just one study from numerous cases that have documented positive outcomes for treatment of chronic ear infections through chiropractic care.
